Many airlines as per FAA guidelines do not allow electric scooters the simple reason behind this is they carry lithium-ion batteries. These lithium-ion batteries are prohibited from carrying because they are inflammable, which makes them dangerous for other co-passengers.

The FAA allows batteries ranging from 100Wh to 160 Wh. The scooters with 100Wh batteries are generally meant for kids. Batteries ranging more than 160 Wh are restrained. This limitation is a major disadvantage in carrying an electric scooter suitable for adults, as they generally have 300Wh which exceeds the limit.

Things to remember before planning to take your scooter with you on the plane:

  • There must be approval for any lithium-ion battery that exceeds 100 Wh, they might not accept or limit them to carry on baggage.
  • Any device with a lithium-ion battery of more than 160 Wh is prohibited.
  • The device cannot be turned on during transit.
  • The batteries must be isolated to protect them from any damage.

Contact your airlines to know whether they accept electric scooters as carry-on or checked baggage as many of the airlines do not accept. As per US and International regulations, these may be carried under other portable devices if they match the terms and conditions of the mentioned airlines.

Kindly reach the airport two hours before your flight, and enquire about any surcharge for removing and packing the battery. You may also remove it and do nice packaging from home. Please carry the proof of the battery size if it is not mentioned on the package or the device itself as they may ask for. You can always go for a bag size of 24*26 inches which nearly costs you $20 to $30 and it can be used as a checked bag and can go underneath the plane when the plane flies.

There is also an alternative to this situation. It is believed that on an adventurous e-scooter trip. If you do proper research, you can hire a battery at your desired destination, it’s easy to find the lender. Make sure that the battery is compatible with your particular model so that there, will be less chance of malfunctioning.  Once everything is finalized, you remove the battery and fly with the other essential parts of the electric scooter. Once you reach you are ready to go for fun. Maybe, it looks too difficult to do, but hiring an entire e-scooter is costlier than this as your trip might be longer.
